How You Can Be Held In Contempt In An Ocean Springs Divorce

There’s a bunch of different ways on how you can be held in contempt in an Ocean Springs divorce.

I want to talk about one that the Mississippi Court of Appeals decided the ex-wife was in contempt.

The husband and wife were divorced and signed a property settlement agreement.

When you sign this property settlement agreement, it is no different than a contract.

You have to honor it.

You can’t just sign and date and then later say, I didn’t know what I signed or I don’t agree with it now or some other such non-sense.

You better do what in the heck it says or else.

The “else” is what happened in Karen Chance v. Rickey Chance.

This was an Ocean Springs divorce case that ended up in the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

The chancery court judge held Karen in contempt.

Karen claimed she could not pay taxes and some other items as the property settlement that she signed and dated required.

She did this for years.

Meanwhile, Karen enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii and other things.

Rickey asked that she pay the things but Karen kept refusing.

So Rickey hired a lawyer and filed a Motion for Contempt.

The chancery court judge held Karen in contempt and made Karen pay Rickey’s attorney’s fees.

The moral?

It’s no different than what every parent should be teaching their kids: if you sign and date something, you had better do what it says.

If you don’t, the “or else” may happen to you.
